Consider this review a “4.3”
Pros:
Metal zip and zipper
Front pockets are built onto the shorts with the same material (no flimsy white flapping pocket)
Rear pockets have hook-and-loop closure
Decent canvas thickness, implies longevity (we’ll have to see)
Cons:
Sewed-on plastic main button above the zipper = failure prone
Since my 5″ Trail shorts are getting worn out, and are discontinued, these appear to be the closest one can get without going to the guys who bought out the big “c.” If only these had a riveted metal button, I’d go full-on 5 stars. Of course, we’ll have to see how many wash/wears I get out of them, but for now, color me impressed!

My poor husband has lost his butt as he has aged, and has also lost weight – which is a good thing. All of his jean shorts are size 40 and he can’t keep them up even with a belt. I took it upon myself to order these for him in 38. He was NOT happy about the elastic in the waist. He said they were “old man” shorts (we are old) and he didn’t want to wear them. But they stay up! I packed them for him to wear on a trip last weekend, and he wasn’t happy about wearing them, but he did. I think he looked very nice in them. I bet I see him in them more often. His phone sure fit nicely in the pocket, too, and that is important.

This is a well made pair of shorts, that are quite durable and stoutly made, but there are a few things I don’t like about them.
First, the belt loops are small, at best only a 1 inch belt will fit.
Second, the pockets are long, 16 inches compared to my other hiking shorts with 11 inch deep pockets. That might not sound bad, but to get my keys, I have to bend forward to reach the bottom, it’s fast becoming an irritation.
Lastly, and this might just be me, there’s something off about the crotch. It feels like it “extra sized”.

I have been wearing these all summer and I love them. I ended up buying more pairs I liked them so much. I have a shorter (30″) inseam and it is hard to find shorts that don’t fall at or below the knee. These are just above my knee and the pockets are laid out very nicely so that everything in them is higher and not weighted down and bouncing against your leg. I wish they made them in a cotton/poly blend that would dry a bit faster for summer activities, but they work great.

I love they way they fit and all the stuff I carry fits well in the pockets. I don’t like cargo shorts which rub the back of my knees These have the convenience of cargo shorts but not that irritation. They wear fairly well which prevents me from rating 5 stars. The side of the pocket on my right side rips due to the fact that I carry a small flashlight and the button had broken on several pairs in the past. But I haven’t had this issues with the last 5 or so pairs I’ve had. Over the years, I’ve probably gone through 8 pairs, but I wear them all the time around the house and outdoors. Even more so since working from home.

Sam’s Club used to sell these for ~$12 a pair. In the last ~15 years I’ve bought at least 2 of every color. When they upgraded them with the ‘tech pocket’ I thought I was in heaven. Sam’s stopped carrying them a couple years ago and but for less than $25 they’re still a good deal. They’re comfortable, durable, and for guys with shorter legs, they don’t look like knee-length knickers as many shorts do.

I have been looking to replace my hiking shorts that I have had for a good number of years that finally had more holes in them to wash for the last time. I wanted a heaver fabric–having tried the light weight and even though they dried quicker I like the feel of substance esp. when I make a miss step and take a fall. Also I want pockets that all close so I don’t have to worry about what goes in what pocket and I prefer just a straight opening in the back–no flap as the flaps seem to always roll up. Finally I don’t like longer legs as when climbing etc I want more leg freedom without having to hike them up. These meet all those goals even though I still think they are just a bit too long– I don’t think I can find anything shorter but all I see is longer. Fit was right on–have a 34 waist and that’s what worked. Ordered the dark blue and will go with anything. Glad I bought them and sent another pair back because of issues these did not have–like back pockets not being secure and fewer front pockets and longer legs. Also front pockets are nice and deep for longer things.

I like these shorts so much that they, in various colors, have almost become my casual uniform. The tech pocket on the right is perfect for my cell phone, the small pockets on the front of the larger pockets, are great for things you carry but don’t pull out (key fob always on the left for me so the cell phone doesn’t interfere). Shorts are comfortable and sturdy. My only complaint is they are currently in short supply! 🙁

This is JUST what I was looking for. A lightweight, sturdy, fast-drying material in a short that has adequate pockets (I HATE having pockets that you can’t put anything in) The length is just what I wanted too. Some don’t like short inseams, but I was specifically looking for these, and these fit the bill. If you get them wet (not uncommon biking or hiking) they dry quickly just from body heat. They do tend to have a “crinkle finish” but I don’t mind that. They don’t get creased up, always looking and fitting comfortably. If you demand a “crisp finish” (like freshly ironed) then these aren’t for you.

Plenty of pockets and the tech pocket is perfect for my iPhone. I got a couple pair of the khaki color but the material was too thick, so I donated them. I subsequently got the blue and darker colors and the thickness of the material is perfect & more lightweight. Very comfortable and durable.

I’ve had many, many different types of shorts for men and these are the best so far. They are the perfect length for me, about 3 inches above the knees. They are 100% cotton and feel soft and super comfortable. After two washings, they did not shrink. All the pockets are well sown and are deep. The only difference is in the advertised picture, they are NOT the rust-colored ones as shown. My attached pic shows a true Khaki color that I actually received, which is even better! Love these shorts for guys!!

These shorts are longer then they appear in the picture, coming down to knee-level (I wear a 30 inch inseam). I guess that’s the style now, but they are so long they hardly seem like shorts. I returned them.

These are good shorts. If you’re average height or taller, these will work very well for you. As a small person, I was seeking some hiking shorts with a true 6” inseam. These are a bit long, and the inseam is beyond 6”. Still, I like the color and fabric quality, and can live with these being a tick on the long side.
It seems almost all of the apparel makers are going longer in the inseam for pants and shorts, and these fall into that same category. The hunt continues!
The Davinator –
They are very nicely built. Excellent material and workmanship. The waist size was exactly what I expected. A little on the dressy side as compared to most hiking shorts. The problem is the picture must be of a pair with about a 40″ waist, because the legs are much longer than they appear. The description doesn’t mention the inseam length, so I just guessed 7″. But these are a full 8″, and they hit the top of my kneecaps when I am standing. Not a bad look for a garden party in the Hamptons, but not much good for hiking in the Appalachians on a 90 degree day. I had to return them. If you are super tall, or you like your shorts not-so-short, these are the ones for you

These Savane shorts, in my opinion, look much better on skinny legged guys than the longer leg shorts that nearly everyone else makes. Sam’s Club used to sell these really cheap (about $14), but they quit carrying the khaki color. These are really comfortable shorts, and I like all of the pockets. And yes, I know cargo shorts are out of style, but an old man doesn’t have to worry about such things.

I used to buy these at Sam’s Club I would get a reasonable number of them take them to a tailor and have the legs shortened about 3 inches and be good for years, every time I saw some I would pick some up but I haven’t seen them at Sam’s Club in several years but I just managed to search for them and found them and started ordering them again they have a specific cell phone pocket that works very well

What I received was not as pictured. I have a previous pair of these and they are, as pictured on Amazon, a faded denim.
What I received was a deep indigo pair, and is nowhere near faded, or looking like my previous denim Savane pair. The picture of the product did not accurately depict what was being sold.
The gauge of the denim is also lighter but not a show stopper. Was hoping for the shorts as pictured, not what I got.

I like Savane for their expanding waist and bought their cotton and polyester walk shorts in the past. i thought these would be an interesting variation but they are disappointing. the fabric appears to be pilling cheap. i wouldn’t buy again. For $19 they still aren’t worth the money. if you’re looking for durable hiking shorts i’d move on.

I took off one star for the Velcro in the back pockets. We may like to think of outdoors style clothing in terms of hiking and such, but in reality many of us who work outside or in and out use it as work clothes. I sell to gas stations and c stores. Once I collect the bill for my services I like to be on my way before those standing around get any ideas, and don’t want anything getting in the way of that.
Other than that these are fine. They are a better length to me than most that are longer. They seem durable.

These shorts are good. I would prefer a longer inseam, but the options were limited. My primary issue is with the side cargo pockets. Be aware that they are on the small side. I like to keep my wallet and cell phone in them. A wallet larger than the basic bifold, or with any thickness, barely fits and is a bit of a challenge to put in or pull out. And, a cell phone other than a smaller one, while it will fit, the flap may not close with the phone in the pocket. I have a Samsung Note 10, and 1.5 inches of the phone is above the top of the pocket. If those smaller pockets and shorter inseam are of no concern, the shorts are quite nice.

I have purchased several pairs of these shorts in the past, we are talking over 6 years, and they are still going strong. Living where I do, I wear shorts ten months out of the year, so they get a lot wear and they still hold up very well. These shorts are great, plenty of pockets and they even have one in front of your right pocket for your cell. Great pair of shorts. I will be purchasing more in the future.

I’m an athletically built 5’6″…I wrestled in high school and have a wrestler’s build but I am also an avid cyclist with huge leg muscles. Being short and squat, so to speak, it is hard for me to find normal cargo shorts in a 36 inch waist that don’t hang down below my knees and look almost like “crop pants”…These, with the 6 inch inseam are perfect.
But the zipper is very smooth working…I may need to apply some graphite to it to see if I can make it zip open and closed more smoothly. But other than that I am very happy with these…the “technology pocket” is great.

Savane shorts have always been my favorite, but they have been hard to find in recent years. These are the same that I love, made with good canvas material and handy, deep pockets. I will continue to be on the lookout for the same kind in my size.
